Mariners stay on top after visit to the West

-

The Central Coast Mariners have proven their reign in the west, taking down Perth Glory 2-1 last night in a rainy stand-off at HBF Park.

The Mariners were quick to take the lead, with Matt Simon taming a ball off three heads and sending it into the right hand corner of the net in the 6th minute.

The majority of the first half was end to end, as players learned to handle the evening’s slippery conditions, each vying for long term possession of the ball.

While Glory made few attempts at goal, one attempt from Sullivan in the 23rd minute had the crowd roaring for the VAR at a potential handball, however it was quickly deemed play on by referees.

It was not until the 41st minute the Mariners sought to double their lead. A free kick from Daniel De Silva sent the ball directly off the head of striker Marcos Urena into the back of the net to seal their second goal of the night.

More touch and go possession had crowds settling into a fairly lackluster start to the second half.

Glory were quick to give their side a fresh face, subbing on crowd favourites Andy Keogh, Kosuke Ota and Diego Castro for a much-needed energy boost.

And much needed it was, Ota sending a long ball to Fornaroli in the 65th minute who slid it over the line, past the hands of Mark Birighitti, earning the team’s first goal of the night.

The crowd held their breath as an appeal for offside was made but with the decision upheld, the purple army welcomed the goal sparking motivation into players.

Despite their efforts, the Central Coast proved too tough for Glory. As they continually failed to make passes and easy attempts on goal for the remainder of the half.

Two early goals from the Mariners was all it took to lock in their 2-1 win over Glory ans maintain their number one spot on the ladder.

Also proving a confidence boost for the side ahead of a clash with second on the ladder, Macarthur FC, on Monday.
