Newcastle Jets suffer first loss in six games

-

Newcastle Jets’ undefeated run came to an end after a 2-0 loss to Wellington Phoenix at McDonald Jones Stadium.

Wellington Phoenix were quick off the mark with all ammunition loaded into their attack. A warning shot from Ulises Dávila left the home side treading cautiously in defence.

The Jets were quick to respond to the uptempo start and launched their own assaults on goal. Three different yet close call opportunities appeared in the opening eight minutes.

Roy O’Donovan manoeuvred through the holes in Wellington’s defence and almost capitalised on a fumble in their backline.

In the 17th minute, Liam McGing shutdown a three-on-two breakthrough run from Newcastle. The Nix held base despite constant pressure in their attacking third.

Luck found Wellington in the 22nd minute, after a heavy deflection off Nigel Boogaard resulted in David Ball bringing the team into a 1-0 lead.

Steven Ugarkovic almost evened the scoreboard with a powerful strike that was a hair too wide from the far side post.

In the 35th minute, Joshua Laws received a yellow card after a late tackle on Johnny Koutroumbis left the defender down winded.

Wellington’s compact defence combined with a stroke of bad luck prevented an equaliser from the blue-and-reds despite their relentless efforts.

Valentino Yuel almost opens the second half with a header into goal but Oliver Sail’s hand was quick to the punch.

In the 53rd minute, Ben Waine solidifies Wellington’s lead at 2-0 after launching a missile well outside the box. Unfortunately, Jack Duncan could not get across the goal’s face.

Frustration was getting the best of Newcastle with two yellow cards handed to Matthew Millar and Connor O’Toole respectively.

The Nix were making the most of the Jets lacklustre and sloppy performance. Unfortunately, the homeside struggled to break through their opponent’s tight defence.

In the 69th minute, Tete Yengi comes on for Yuel and manages to win the corner for the Jets yet the opportunity goes to waste.

As the clock ticked on, the Jets’ composure continued to deteriorate with desperate attempts failing to come to fruition.

Newcastle Jets succumbed to a strong defensive showing from Wellington, unable to find the scoreboard and ultimately resulting in their first loss in six games.
