Victory secure finals with Glory thumping

-

Melbourne Victory secured their spot in the W-League finals with a 6-0 thumping of Perth Glory and have their eyes on first prize.

A brace to Melina Ayres and Kyra Cooney-Cross provided a valuable confidence boost ahead of a must-win clash with Sydney FC, as Victory now aim for top spot on the table.

The psychological importance of this win was recognised by head coach Jeff Hopkins.

“It’s a morale boost for us, we’ve been playing well recently. We talked about it, it’s important we move those moments of pressure into scoreboard pressure,” he said.

“We spoke about that, to go out there and just to keep going the way we’re going. To really try to punish any mistakes and finish off our good play.”

By keeping Perth out, Victory recorded their fourth clean sheet in five matches. Conceding just one goal in the five match run, provided Hopkins with a great deal of confidence heading into the finals.

“Without keeping clean sheets and without defending the way we have defended, you don’t win games,” he said.

“We’ve cut out individual mistakes and it has been a lot of hard work from the players on the training field.”

It also presented Hopkins with a selection dilemma, as he said every member of the squad played their part in the win.

“I can pick from 15-16 players now and I know that everyone called in will do a good job for me,” he said.

“Definitely keeps me on my toes in terms of selection and keeps the players on their toes as well.”

The dilemma does not get any easier, with Annalie Longo cleared of injury despite being subbed off with a sore calf.

As such, she will be available for selection in the next match.

Victory travel to take on Sydney FC this Wednesday night in the last match of the regular season. A win will hand Victory first spot, while a draw or a loss will keep them in third.
