Victory suffers their worst A-League defeat

-

Melbourne Victory recorded their biggest ever loss with a 6-0 defeat to Melbourne City at Marvel Stadium.

The derby commenced with City taking control of possession from the opening stages.

Conor Metcalfe had the game’s opening chance within four minutes, but his close range shot was denied by Max Crocombe.

Andrew Nabbout had an opportunity to score minutes later, if not for a block by Jake Brimmer.

As pressure continued to mount, City were awarded a penalty after Dalibor Markovic brought down Nathaniel Atkinson. However, Jamie Maclaren failed to convert from the spot, as his penalty rattled the crossbar.

Nabbout had another attempt on the half-volley from inside the box, but sent the ball flying over the bar.

City’s breakthough arrived in the 34th minute after an unaware Maclaren deflected Nabbout’s strike into the back of the net.

Following the goal, Victory wrestled back some territory but ultimately failed to create any clear-cut chances before half time.

The second half began much like the first, with City creating the first chance of the half. Metcalfe’s low pass into the box was met by Maclaren who fired wide from close range.

City’s dominance was rewarded with a second goal in the 53rd minute after Berenguer tapped in Nabbout’s cross to make it 2-0.

The score turned into a thrashing within minutes, as Rostyn Griffiths headed home City’s third following a corner.

Craig Noone nearly made it four, but his header narrowly went wide after another cross from Nabbout.

The fourth goal eventually came, as Metcalfe sent a rocket into the top corner from the edge of the box.

Just three minutes later, Metcalfe made it a brace to go 5-0.

With minutes to go, Stefan Colakovski scored his first ever A-League goal to hand Victory their biggest ever defeat at 6-0.

This result allows City to rise to fourth, while Victory remain rock bottom on the A-League table.
