Juric heaps praise on young Sydney FC squad

-

Sydney FC manager Ante Juric has lauded the overall team culture of his young squad following their 3-0 victory over Canberra United that propelled his side into the W-League grand final.

Juric said he was extremely proud of his side, pointing to their young age. He also noted they have had to contend with injuries to key players throughout the season.

“It doesn’t get spoken about enough,” said Juric.

“They’re all youngsters… We lost two centre back starters – then we lost Cortnee Vine… she is a key player.

“We have not been reliant on one particular player and I believe in everyone. Whoever comes in – it’s a bit of a system more than an individual… we don’t rely on individuals.”

Sydney was forced to make six singings in the off-season after a host of stars departed for foreign moves. Juric said a recruitment policy focusing on players with a winning mentality has been key to his sides success.

“The players we went for were high levelled players who expect success,” he said.

“These girls – although they are young – they have played for Australian teams and won as juniors. They’re the players you want, because they step up when it counts.”

“The culture and the environment is superb. It’s the best in the four years I have been here.”

Sydney’s win means they will take on Melbourne Victory on Sunday in the W-League grand final.

Despite beating Victory 2-1 last Wednesday to secure the W-League premiership, Juric said the result meant little going into the grand final – and his squad was fully focused on winning the double.

“We know it’s another 90 minutes,” he said.

“We can’t play our hand on what we did last week. Victory think they can beat us, we think we can beat them.

“I’m actually glad we are playing them. It will be a tough game and a good game for the fans.”
