Record breaking premiership will be remembered forever: Polias

-

Sydney FC captain Teresa Polias has heaped praised on her young teammates following their 2-1 win over Melbourne Victory to secure the club the W-League Premiership.

Sydney was forced to field a young squad this season after losing a host of experienced Matildas to overseas moves in the off-season.

The Sky Blues average squad age is 22, meaning they are the youngest team to win a W-League premiership.

Polias said she was immensely proud of her young squad, and the achievement would be remembered as a historic moment.

“I am over the moon for such a young team to come out and perform like this tonight. I am so proud,” Polias said.

“For these young girls to be able to achieve what we did this season, it needs to be spoken about forever.

“I am so happy for this group. They deserve it. From day one they have worked super hard. It’s just a joy to share it with them.”

Despite holding the W-League record for appearances with 158 games played, this was only Polias’ second premiership.

The Sydney skipper said she was relieved to have won her second premiership, but the long wait made the success even more special.

“It’s been a 10 year wait,” Polias said.

“It’s hard to describe the feeling.”

Sydney’s victory means they will face Canberra United on Monday afternoon at Netstrata Jubilee Stadium for a spot in the grand final.

Polias said while the squad would celebrate the win, they were fully focused on Monday’s game – stating the squad’s goal was to win the double.

“It’s important to let them enjoy what they achieved tonight, but we have to get our heads right for the semi,” she said.

“We are happy to take some silverware home, but the next big thing is waiting for us.”
