Victory win in Kean’s first game in charge

Steve Kean marked his first game as Melbourne Victory interim coach with a 5-4 win against Western Sydney Wanderers.

Goals to Storm Roux, Dylan Ryan, Jacob Butterfield, and a brace by Ben Folami were enough to hold off a late Wanderers charge.

Kean said he was proud of his team’s intent, but remained wary of Victory nearly giving up a four-goal lead in the dying stages.

“A great effort, but a game’s never finished until you learned something from it. Certainly, the learning aspect is how you manage the game,” he said.

“We need to try and manage the game and don’t chase another goal.”

From a defensive standpoint, conceding four goals was disappointing for Kean.

“It’s good to get a win. There is plenty to work on,” he said.

“We shouldn’t have to score five goals to win a football match.”

Despite not finding the back of the net, the win was largely facilitated by the presence of Rudy Gestede. His ability to create space for fellow attacking players was recognised by Kean.

“When you’ve got Rudy on the pitch, some people may not think he had an impact, but when he’s on there sometimes he ties up two or three defenders,” he said.

“Robbie Kruse had an exceptional game because he’s playing beside Rudy [Gestede].

“It’s not a coincidence that Ben Folami got more into the game.”

Victory will look to build on this win as they travel to play Sydney FC this Tuesday. Their hopes will be boosted by the expected return of Nick Ansell from injury.
