5 pivotal games heading into the finals series

-

As the A-League season heads closer to the end and we reach the pinnacle of the 2020/21 season, many teams have big games coming up that may define their finals campaign.

With many teams heading into their final five games, we have compiled a list of the five biggest games left in the regular season that will determine the top six spots and how each team rounds out their campaign.

5. Central Coast Mariners vs Western United

These sides have had quite the opposite run in the season thus far. With the Mariners starting strong and United having never really found a great run of form at any point.

The Mariners recent run as of late has been lacking, and if that is to continue, then this match on the last match-day may determine if they make finals or stay in fifth or sixth position.

For United, if they can bounce back with the games they have in hand, this match could help them earn a potential bye in the finals, or they may sneak into the finals.

4. Adelaide United vs Sydney FC

This could prove to be a heavyweight battle on the second last match day. With both sides currently sitting second and third, this match will determine who gets a week off.

The past two meetings for these teams has seen Adelaide win the first encounter and both sides share the point.

For both sides, this match may prove to be the reason they lift the Premier’s Plate and, crucially for Sydney, the reason they may get their coveted three-peat.

3. Western United vs Macarthur FC

Western United and Macarthur FC are pretty different teams, but both have failed to perform as their best version of themselves for most of the season.

So this matchup is going to be quite interesting, with Macarthur being a slow defensive team and United, when at their best, a quality attacking side.

However, this game is essential for both teams as they are fighting for the same finals position from four down to six.

This matchup is going to determine if either team can make the finals.

2. Melbourne City vs Adelaide United

This matchup is not far away for fans, and it could be a potential grand final preview.

Having only played once this season with City being in poor form, United took all three points whilst Scott Jamieson got sent off.

For both sides, this matchup will shake up the race for the top two and could potentially decide who gets a bye in the first round.

For Adelaide, this game is a must-win to keep pressure on City to get the coveted top spot whilst also pressuring Sydney to win all their games as they are a game ahead of United.

1.Western Sydney Wanderers vs Brisbane Roar

This may prove to be the most pivotal matchup heading into the final’s series.

With both teams currently sitting sixth and seventh, the fight for finals is on for them both. However, for the Roar, they now have three games in hand over the wanderers, so this matchup can make or break their season.

The Wanderers have been up and down in form this season, so if they fall out of the finals race, it’s of their own making but the implications of this matchup could determine many team’s finals fate.
