The luckless Blue-And-Reds are looking towards the bigger picture of next season, with their sights set on increasing the quality of their thinned-out squad.
“We’ve been looking over the last three months of local players, Australian-based players and players overseas. We just have to put the pieces of the jigsaw puzzle together,” Deans said.
The narrow defeat against the Mariners, spurred by a highly contested penalty in the 51st minute, did not reflect the homeside’s work rate.
With 15 total shots and numerous opportunities to reclaim the game, the head coach admitted it was a vital time for a playmaker.
“On nights like tonight when there is a bit of pressure and it’s a derby game, that is when you need your quality players to step up,” Deans said.
“This year is about taking chances as they come and it’s a disappointing way to concede a goal.”
The Jets season has been a retelling of the same story with missed chances, a lack of momentum and the inability to finish.
Despite the downward spiral persisting with no wins in six games, Deans is adamant the current squad would continue to work until the season’s conclusion.
“We have had a very difficult off season and it was hard to sign players. But we’re in the moment right now and we’ve got to make the best of what we have,” he said.
“The players that we do have tried their best all year, tried their hardest.”
Deans is looking to broaden the depth in the squad from all directions, hoping to secure the right players for the role.
“We’re working hard behind the scenes to bring in the right players for the next year,” he said.
“We’re talking to a lot of players at the moment and we need to improve the quality of the squad across the board.
