Maclaren seals the century

Melbourne City striker Jamie Maclaren scored his 100th A-League goal in a 3-1 victory over Perth Glory on Wednesday night.

The goal came late in the first half, in the form of a close-range header to finish a cross from Scott Galloway that powered into the net, past the hands of Liam Reddy.

Assistant coach Des Buckingham led the squad on the night and said it was a sensational achievement.

“For any player to score that many of goals, anywhere, is a brilliant achievement for Jamie to hit that 100, it’s a full credit to him and the work load he puts in on and off the field,” he said.

“It’s no surprise that he’s broken that record and I’m sure he will continue to go on breaking other records for goal-scoring.”

The century comes eight years after the 27-year-old’s very first league goal, coincidentally scored for Glory in a game against City.

Maclaren went on to gain his 101st goal in the 68th minute, again with an assist from Galloway. The goal marked another milestone as his 50th goal for the club, both goals making him the club’s all-time top scorer in the league.

Buckingham said the striker’s constant ability to score was an ode to the work of the players around him.

“He’s had some fantastic service from around him and that’s come from hard work by winning the ball back,” he said.

“We’ve been working on trying to get him in goal scoring positions more regularly and the services that’s been provided by others has been great.”

Currently sitting at 22 goals this season, the coach admitted he believed Maclaren was capable of hitting 30 goals before the season’s end, but said he did not want to give him a limit.
