Toothless Victory suffer fifth consecutive loss

Melbourne Victory suffered their fifth consecutive loss after a helpless 1-0 defeat to Adelaide United at AAMI Park.

The performance did not match the occasion of the member recognition round, as Victory failed to register a single shot on target despite a promising injection of youth from the bench.

Victory’s poor first half was largely to blame, after Craig Goodwin scored just before the break. Following that, United were happy to slow down the game without giving up many chances.

“I think we started a little bit slow, we gave them a little bit too much space, we didn’t press properly enough, high enough.

“We were much better in the second half,” said Kean.

Despite a poor first half, Kean said he was left 100 per cent happy with his players.

Those who stood out the most were Victory’s promising young duo – Lleyton Brooks and Nishan Velupillay. Their impact was recognised by the caretaker coach.

“They’ve got energy, but more than energy, they’ve got quality. I think for Nishan Velupillay and Lleyton Brooks, they have got a bright future at the club,” he said.

“I just think they need to be given the right amount of time.

“They’ve certainly shown that they’ve got quality.”

Victory will look to break their losing streak when they play Western United as visitors at AAMI Park next Friday night.
