Winless drought ends for Glory

-

Perth Glory have broken their winless drought, securing their first victory in six games in a 2-1 win over Melbourne Victory at HBF Park.

Both teams came flying from the tunnel, hungry for their first victory in several weeks. Running the ball back and forth across the park, high pressure defence saw neither side creating chances.

Glory striker Bruno Fornaroli created the first opportunity in the game’s 22nd minute, dancing past Victory captain Leigh Broxham to make a cross at goal. However, an impressive save from Matthew Acton saw it deflected.

A bicycle kick from Rudy Gestede into the hands of Callum Timmins had Victory lined up for a penalty in the 24th minute. Robbie Kruse aimed for the net’s bottom right, but keeper Liam Reddy met the ball with sharp hands preventing the goal.

The end-to-end run continued for the remainder of the half, with neither team seeing themselves with any more chances to open the scoring.

The pressure proved too much for Nick Ansell just minutes into the second half. The defender received an instant red card in the 48th minute for sliding studs up into Callum Timmins and sending him tumbling across the field.

Glory was quick to recover and Fornaroli soon produced the game’s opener in the 52nd minute. A team effort saw Diego Castro and Ciaran Bramwell work to break through the opposition to perfectly line up Fornaroli to tip it in.

Quick to back it up, Chris Ikonomidis gained a second point for the home side in the 56th minute. A long cross from Carlo Armiento found the midfielder who sent a rocket flying past Acton and into the back of the net.

Victory persisted to gain possession, Rudy Gestede scored in the 80th minute with a soft tap in to follow up Gbenga Folami’s strike into the crossbar.

Despite their constant pressure and ability to steal the ball off the opposition, Victory were unable to produce any further goals and granted Glory the 2-1 win for the night.
