Why Adelaide United will win the A-League

-

Adelaide United fully embraced their underdog status in the 2020/21 A-League season’s finals, after they overcame Brisbane Roar away from home and earned a place in the semi-finals.

Here is why the Reds can shock the country and win their second A-League Championship this year.

Adelaide has been on multiple unbeaten streaks during the home and away campaign

Although they have been labelled inconsistent by some analysts, the Reds went on two significant unbeaten runs across the 2020/21 season.

From round nine to 15, Adelaide claimed six consecutive wins before losing a tight contest against the Central Coast Mariners in Gosford.

After the Mariners ended their first winning streak, United went on a three-game unbeaten run against the Western Sydney Wanderers, Macarthur FC and Sydney FC.

While Adelaide’s momentum began to slow down at the end of the regular season, Sunday’s hard-fought victory on the road could be the spark that ignites another winning streak.

United is one of the A-League’s fastest starters

Adelaide’s strong starts have made it incredibly difficult for opposing teams to match their intensity, including in last Sunday’s elimination final.

Adelaide has scored within the opening 20 minutes of a game on eight occasions this season. Along with their impressive scoring record within the first 20 minutes of each game, Adelaide has only conceded five goals in the same timeframe.

Judging by their rapid starts, Adelaide could be two early onslaughts away from shocking Australian football fans and winning their second A-League Championship.

The Reds have defeated all of the remaining sides this season

Considering United have defeated all three sides left in the finals series during the regular season, there is a genuine possibility they could do it again.

Even though each of their wins against the remaining teams were home games at Coopers Stadium, Adelaide has discovered a winning formula against the A-League’s heavyweights.

The Reds poor away record this campaign suggests they struggle to perform interstate, but the last time they played Sydney on the road, they managed to claw their way back from two goals down and earn a draw.

Last Sunday’s upset victory could be the result that inspires United to go one step further and secure a win on Sydney’s home turf.

With an attacking brand of football and a faithful fanbase behind them, Adelaide is a dark horse that has the potential to shock the country and claim the A-League Championship from the fifth position.
