Defensive errors help push Western United into the FFA Cup round of 32

-

Two mistakes from Newcastle Jets’ keeper Jack Duncan helped Western United to a 2-1 win in their FFA Cup playoff at GMHBA stadium.

In what was the final game for both sides before the A-League Men season starts, it was a physical and highly exciting affair.

Jordan Elsey was given a yellow card for a rugby-style tackle of Dylan Wenzel-Halls in the fifth minute, before Steven Lustica was booked for a rash tackle eight minutes later.

This set the tone, as both teams seemed focused on getting the ball out wide. Josh Risdon and Lachie Wales’ build-up play were the feature point for Western United, as the crosses rained in.

This led to the major talking point of the half. A great Newcastle move in the 31st minute found Angus Thurgate on the edge of the box. His shot was fumbled by Jamie Young and seemingly trickled across the line.

To the dismay of Newcastle players and coaches, the referee waved play-on. With no VAR in-play for the FFA cup, there was no opportunity to review.

Newcastle’s problems were then compounded 13 minutes later, as Kosta Grozos gave the ball away to Neil Kilkenny in midfield. A lack of communication between Jason Hoffman and Jet’s keeper Duncan saw Wales latch onto the through ball and smash it into an empty net.

The end-to-end feel continued, before a piece of magic out of nowhere. After winning a free-kick directly in front of the Western United goal, Daniel Penha stepped up and smashed the ball past Jamie Young and into the top right corner of the net.

Young managed to get hands to the ball, but the on-loan Atletico Mineiro attacker’s sheer power took it past the keeper.

Soon after in the 79th minute, Alessandro Diamanti’s through ball was completely missed by Duncan, giving Aleksander Prijovic the easiest of finishes. Duncan’s second mistake of the match put Western United in the driver’s seat.

Despite a late onslaught from the Jets, United managed to hold on and secure passage into the FFA Cup round of 32.

The focus now turns to round one of the A-League Men’s season. Western United will host Melbourne Victory in the ‘battle of the bridge’, whilst the Jets host Central Coast in the F3 derby.
