The first chance of the game fell to Adelaide in the fifth minute with Stefan Mauk glancing his header just wide of the post.

The opening stages of the match were marred with a number of fouls by Perth Glory as their frustration seemed to get the better of them.

In the 17th minute, a mistake by keeper Brad Jones gifted Kusini Yengi a gilt-edged chance but he was unable to take advantage.

Just moments later Adelaide continued to pile on the pressure as Ben Halloran struck the post with a strike from just inside the box.

Yengi opened the scoring in the 22nd minute in controversial fashion tucking home a cut back from Halloran after Kosuke Ota had appeared to be fouled.

Adelaide had a chance to double their lead a few minutes later when Louis D’Arrigo put his header over the bar from close range.

Antonee Burke-Gilroy forced an outstretched save from Adelaide keeper James Delianov with a curling shot from outside the box.

In the 40th minute, Bruno Fornaroli delivered a piece of magic taking the ball on the turn and smashing it into the top left-hand corner from 30 yards to bring Glory level.

Adelaide thought they had taken the lead early in the second half as Kitto tapped home, however, the goal was disallowed for a foul on Jack Clisby.

Glory was denied a second as VAR made its presence felt disallowing Burke-Gilroy’s debut A-League Men goal for an offside in the build-up.

In the 70th minute, a cross from Burke-Gilroy found Fornaroli whose deflected shot was clawed away by Delianov.

A cagey challenge by Daniel Stynes on Isaías resulted in a yellow card for both players with the Spaniard booked for diving.

The introduction of Daniel Sturridge in the 85th minute drew a raucous applause from the home fans as the Englishman made his long-awaited debut.

However, Glory fans were denied a dream debut as he was unable to make the difference, the game finishing 1-1.

The end-to-end contest offered plenty of positives for both sides as they begin their 2021/2022 A-League Men season, but Glory will rue their missed chances in front of their home fans.
