Canberra’s miraculous comeback as they secure first point of the season

-

Two goals in the last 10 minutes brought Canberra United back from the jaws of defeat and secured a 3-3 draw with Brisbane Roar at Viking Park on Thursday evening.

It was Brisbane who started the brighter of the two, with Katrina Gorry taking an early long-range shot in the fourth minute, forcing a sharp save from Canberra United’s keeper Keeley Richards.

Despite the early pressure it was in fact Canberra who were able to get on the scoresheet first in the 10th minute after Allira Toby found space down the left-hand side. A perfectly weighted cut-back gave star striker Michelle Heyman a simple chance to give the home side a 1-0 lead.

It was Heyman who was nearly able to double the lead, with an attempted chip going straight into the thankful arms of Roar keeper Georgina Worth just three minutes later.

The good work of Canberra was all undone in the 23rd minute, after a pass back from defender Karly Roestbakken was missed by Richards to gift the away side an equaliser.

After a short drink break it was again Toby who was able to find space behind the Brisbane defence, hitting the far post after beating the keeper in the 26th minute.

It was instead Brisbane who were able to grab a half-time lead through Shea Connors in the 38th minute, with the winger pouncing on a loose ball after an attempted save from Richards.

After a quiet first 20 minutes of the second half it was Brisbane who were able to get themselves a two-goal lead off the boot of Anna Margraf in the 64th minute. After a corner wasn’t dealt with, the winger took aim from outside of the box, finding the bottom corner via the help of a deflection.

It was nearly 4-1 mere minutes later when Roar striker Larissa Crummer was able to find space, pushing the shot just wide after beating Richards in goal.

An 87th minute long-range free kick from Grace Maher was enough to lift the home fans off their seats, as they reduced the deficit to just one.

The Canberra faithful did in fact get the early Christmas present that they desired with substitute Holly Caspers scoring in the 93rd minute to complete the comeback.

Canberra now head to Western Sydney on New Year’s Day looking to build off this performance, whilst Brisbane will be looking to avenge their earlier loss to Melbourne Victory away the day after.
