Western United go top with win over Brisbane

-

Connor Pain struck the winner as Western United beat Brisbane Roar 1-0 at GHMBA Stadium.

The winger’s 50th minute strike was enough to give coach John Aloisi the win against his former side.

In what has been a trend for Western United this season, there were many guilt-edged chances but little breakthrough on the scoreboard. Despite only having 44% of possession, they dominated shots on target, six to one.

It began in the 6th minute as Alessandro Diamanti dispossessed Anton Mlinaric on the edge of the box, before having his shot deflected wide for a corner.

From this point onwards, the green and black had the majority of chances.

Ben Garuccio’s 8th minute cross was headed into the path of Dylan Wenzel-Halls, who’s outside of the foot volley was well-saved by Roar keeper Macklin Freke.

Three minutes later Wales drove into the area and cut the ball back for Connor Pain at the penalty spot. His shot was well-saved into the waiting feet of Wenzel-Halls, who took too many touches as his shot was easily saved.

United looked dangerous as Wales and Pain speed continually trouble the Roar backline throughout the half.

If was almost deja vu in the 44th minute, as Wales cut the ball back to pain once again. The one-time Socceroo took too many touches as his shot was easily blocked.

The job was made harder for Brisbane only a few minutes into the second half, as Corey Brown limped off injured.

In the 50th minute, Joshua Risdon played in Wales who’s cutback was expertly volleyed into the top corner of the net by Connor Pain to make it 1-0.

It was no more than Western United deserved.

Seven minutes later it should have been two. Garuccio nutmegged his defender on the edge of the box and cut the ball back to Pain, who blasted the ball over from a slight angle.

Brisbane emptied their bench in pursuit of the equalizer, but aside from a couple of Jay O’Shea shots from outside the box, Roar barely troubled United’s backline.

It leaves Brisbane winless ahead of next week’s game against Perth. Western United find themselves at the top of the A-League table ahead of their clash against Adelaide on Friday night.
