The A-League Men’s club with the most golden boots

-

Over the 16 seasons since the A-League Men’s inception, there have been 20 golden boots awarded, but which club comes out on top?

There is a three-way tie at the top between Brisbane Roar, Melbourne Victory and Melbourne City.

The Roar have claimed three awards courtesy of Alex Brosque’s eight goals in 2005-06 followed by Besart Berisha’s 19 goals in 2011-12 and Jamie Maclaren 19 goals in 2016-17.

Melbourne Victory have also produced their fair share of marksmen over the years. Archie Thompson’s eight goals in 2005-06 saw him share the award, Danny Allsopp only needed 11 goals in 2006-07 while Berisha equalled Maclaren’s tally in 2016-17.

Melbourne City have Bruno Fornaroli’s 23 goal haul in 2015-16 and Maclaren’s back-to-back golden boot seasons in 2019-20 and 2020-21 to thank for their tally.

Surprisingly, only three sides have been crowned A-League premiers in the same season they won the golden boot.

These include Melbourne Victory’s 2006-07 season during which Danny Allsopp top-scored with 11 goals and Sydney FC’s 2017-18 season where Bobo scored 27 goals.

Bobo’s 27 goals that season was the most to ever win the golden boot, while Allsopp scored the fewest to win the award outright.

Rounding out the list is last year’s premiers Melbourne City, who were led by Maclaren’s 25 goals.

Perth Glory, Gold Coast United and Adelaide United sit joint-bottom of the list with one golden boot a piece.

The Glory’s only golden boot came all the way back in the first A-League Men’s season during which Bobby Despotovski scored eight goals.

Before their A-League Men’s license was revoked, Shane Smeltz lead the line for Gold Coast United in the 2009-10 season scoring 19 goals to pick up the award.

While Sergio van Dijk’s scored 16 goals for Adelaide in 2010-11 to claim the award.

Western Sydney Wanderers, Macarthur and Western United are the only sides left in the competition yet to win the golden boot.

Seven games into the 2021-22 season Nicholas D’Agostino, Beka Mikeltadze and Maclaren lead the scoring charts with four goals each.

Maclaren will be hoping to make it a hat-trick of golden boots this season and his fourth overall, a feat never achieved by another A-League player.
