History of Adelaide United and Current Form

Adelaide United is a professional football club from Adelaide in South Australia. The club began its life almost two decades ago, in 2003. It effectively replaced two teams from Adelaide – Adelaide City and West Adelaide, both of which ended their stints in the National Soccer League and left an opening in the town.

Adelaide United became the sole football team in the city, based at Coopers Stadium or Hindmarsh Stadium, the formal name of the location.

Carl Veart is the Adelaide United head coach, a former footballer who spent most of his career in Adelaide-based teams, including Adelaide United.

The team is a big part of the A-League. It holds the record for the largest win in the league, as they defeated North Queensland Fury with 8-1. The club also won the first FFA Cup in 2014, and in 2016, they came on top of the A-League after defeating the Western Sidney Wanderers.

At the moment, they are only sixth in the league rankings, but we are only halfway into the 2021-22 season, so they have a good shot of advancing further.

The team played 11 matches and won three of them, while five were a draw. With only three defeats, it’s not a bad score. The last match they played against Sydney FC was a loss with 1-2, but that was the only loss in the last five matches.

History of Melbourne City and Current Form

Melbourne City is a professional football club based in Cranbourne East, a suburb of Melbourne with around 16,000 people. The team is a bit younger than Adelaide United, having begun its life in 2009. They are based at the AAMI Park, and their current coach is Patrick Kisnorbo, a notable former centre-back player with 18 caps for the national team.

Even though they are a young team, Melbourne City is already the champion of both the A-League, which they won last season with 3-1 against Sydney FC, and the FFA Cup, which they won in 2016.

They are currently in their best form, poised to defend the title. The team also came in second in the 2019-20 season, and did the same with the FFA Cup.

Melbourne City is ranked second in the table, but that’s only two points above Adelaide United, so things can change quickly and easily. However, it’s worth noting that they have only lost one out of their last five matches and won the remaining four.

Adelaide United vs Melbourne City Head-to-Head Stats

These two teams have already played 37 matches against each other, and currently, the total score favours Adelaide United, but only slightly. They won a total of 14 games, while Melbourne City won 12. What’s more, the two teams played as many as 11 matches that ended in a draw.

The current goal score is almost even, with 59:55 in favour of Adelaide United. However, the overall picture becomes a tad more interesting when you look at their last encounters:

  • Their last encounter on 15 January 2022 ended in a draw with two goals each.
  • The last match in 2021, in late November, also ended with the same 2-2 result.
  • As for the remaining two matches the teams played in 2021, one ended in Melbourne City’s favour where they won with 4-1, while the other ended in Adelaide United’s favour with 2-1.

At the moment, the teams’ top scorers are Craig Goodwin for Adelaide United and Jamie Maclaren for Melbourne City, with five goals for the former and seven for the latter.

Predicted 11 for Both Teams

Nothing is set in stone right now, but the probable line-up for the two is as follows:

Melbourne City – T. Glover (1), S Jamieson (3), C. Good (22), R. Griffiths (5), C. Jenkinson (6), A. O`Neill (8), A. Nabbout (15), F. Berenguer (10), C. Metcalfe (18), M. Leckie (7), J. MacLaren (9)

Adelaide United – J. Gauci (46), J. Lopez (21), L. Barr (25), M. Jakobsen (22), R. Kitto (7), S. Mauk (8), Isaias (10), Juande (28), L. Brook (77), H. Ibusuki (15), C. Goodwin (11)

Top Picks for the Match

It will be a tough match for the two. Melbourne City is currently the favourite, but only slightly. This is the current sentiment, especially when considering the odds that heavily favour Melbourne City. With the odds on Melbourne City being around 1.6, 5.7 on Adelaide United, and as high as 4.0 on a draw, a Melbourne victory is almost assured.

However, nothing is assured, and we wouldn’t rule out either of the two options. Besides the match-winner bet, you should also consider an over/under bet. The chances are great for more than two goals, so an over 2.5 bet is a good idea and carries favourable odds.
