Jets get much needed win over a down on luck Roar

-

After a late loss to Adelaide just four days prior, it was the Newcastle Jets who got the 2-1 win over a sloppy Brisbane Roar on a rain-soaked Thursday night in Newcastle.

Both teams came out with plenty of fire and want for the ball, however, it was the home side with the first opportunity after an early defensive mistake by the Roar. Olivier Boumal took a shot at goal, but Macklin Freke was able to pull off the save without much effort.

Newcastle dominated possession early in the half, but the visitors were not going to back down without a fight as they continued to break up the Jets’ attacking efforts.

The home side found the back of the net first in the 22nd minute, after Savvas Siatravanis took a shot from long range that turned into an own goal by Brisbane’s Freke, making it 1-0.

Another major chance for the Jets came in the 29th minute with Daniel Penha taking a shot that went just wide.

The first yellow card of the game went to Newcastle’s Jason Hoffman after a challenge on Henry Hore which led to a small scuffle between the sides.

Brisbane’s first real chance at goal came in the 36th minute after a penalty was awarded for Angus Thurgate holding Nikola Mileusnic out of play. The shot from James O’Shea was waved away after it hit the left-hand post, keeping them scoreless.

Both teams looked to the bench before kicking off the second half, with Newcastle bringing on Dylan Murnane and Brisbane subbing in Juan Lescano.

A chance for the visitors came in the 55th minute with a well-placed header from Juan Lescano which just missed its target.

Despite being 1-0 down, the Roar were not giving up, with Mileusnic taking his chance at goal with a shot into the bottom left corner but to no avail.

Brisbane got their opportunity to equalise in the 64th minute with Lescano finding the back of the net after a defensive blunder from Jordan Elsey to make it 1-1.

The Jets were not bowing out either. Angus Thurgate regained the lead for his side in the 70th minute with an assist from Daniel Penha, putting them in front 2-1.

The visitors continued their attack and took every opportunity they had to equalise but at the blow of the full-time whistle, it was the home side taking the win.
