Newcastle get one up over Western Sydney in a must-win

-

In a must-win game for both Newcastle Jets and Western Sydney Wanderers, a lone goal from Jets’ star Angus Thurgate saw the home side secure the three points.

Going into the match it was eighth versus tenth, with both sides desperately needing the three points. There was plenty of back-and-forth play between the teams as both sides came out heavy on the attack in the early stages of the game.

The first yellow card of the game went to Western Sydney’s Steven Ugarkovic for a challenge on Newcastle’s Olivier Boumal in the 12th minute.

As things began to heat up between the sides, a free kick was awarded to the home side for Keanu Baccus’ double foul on Boumal and Daniel Penha.

Both teams continued their attacking tirade well into the half as the thirst for the first goal of the night continued to spark play.

A clash with Jordan Elsey saw Baccus down for the count, with a nasty cut to the back of the head, and play halted to assess the situation before he was cleared to continue playing after strapping was applied.

Moving further into the half it was Western Sydney dominating possession as they continued to pursue the first goal of the night. Plenty of opportunities went their way but the ball refused to enter the net.

Despite four minutes of stoppage time added, both sides went into halftime 0-0.

The first sub of the night came before kick-off for the second half. It saw the visitors’ captain James Troisi come off due to an injury concern. It did, however. give 17-year-old Alexander Badolato a chance to enter the field.

It looked to be Western Sydney to open the scoring in the 50th minute after Keijiro Ogawa found the back of the net before it was called offside.

Neglecting the even possession in the early stages of the second half, it was the home side who opened the scoring in the 61st minute with Thurgate finding the back of the net with an assist from Daniel Penha.

A chance to make it 2-0 came for the Jets in the 76th minute with Kosta Grozos looking sure to score but just shooting wide.

With 10 minutes of regular play, plus stoppage time left, it was Newcastle’s game to lose as Western Sydney refused to back down.

At the blow of the full-time whistle, it was a final score of 1-0 with Newcastle taking a much needed three points and sliding into eighth place on the ladder.
