Western United defeat takes Wanderers a few steps back

-

Western Sydney Wanderers fans renewing faith in Mark Rudan’s new tenure took a beating against ladder leader’s Western United, but it is not all bad news for Red and Black fans.

Following the side’s refreshing win on Wednesday night under new coach Rudan, Wanderers’ supporters rallied with a renewed faith in their team before the visitor’s walked away from Commback Stadium with a 0-1 win days later.

United dominated the match’s early minutes after a shaky start, before a two-yard strike by Alessandro Diamanti was hindered by Wanderers’ player Thomas Aquilina’s back.

Aquilina finally found a breakthrough in United’s defence and cut back the perfect ball to Jack Rodwell who hit it wide.

Seconds later, Adama Traore repeated the same play with Tomer Hemed’s attempt at goal going centimetres wide.

At the 16th minute mark, James Troisi lashed a long-range strike which went wide. Before it was followed by Western Sydney’s Aleksandar Prijovic firing point blank at goal, and blasting the ball past Tomás Mejías to make it 1-0.

Western Sydney were shaken by the opening goal coming from the visitors, and responded with more sloppy attempts at goal. A square ball from Rodwell to Keanu Baccus saw him try his luck from distance, but it was palmed away by the Wanderers’ goalkeeper.

United were leading 1-0 at half time. The Wanderers had multiple shots at goal to try and equalise, but hit none on target.

Before a collision between Rodwell and United goalkeeper James Young in the 49th minute led to the Wanderers’ captain receiving his second yellow card to see the side drop to 10 players.

Minutes later Keijiro Ogawa seized a perfect opportunity, but the outcome was far from what the Red and Black were looking for when the unlucky strike hit the inside of the post and deflected outside the net.

Another brilliant chance went begging when Baccus tried to squeeze a shot in the left-hand corner in the 78th minute.

The remainder of the game was another episode of Western Sydney fighting for an equaliser with United looking dangerous on the counterattack.

The game ended with another win for United 1-0, securing their spot on top of the ladder.

United proved to be tougher opponents for Western Sydney than last week, reenforcing that Rudan still has his work cut out for him after his initial success.

The silver lining from the game, however, is the Wanderers’ only conceded once against the first placed team.
