Adelaide locks up finals spot with win over Roar

-

Adelaide United took care of business yet again at home to make it four wins in a row and secure a spot in the A-League Men Finals.

Adelaide entered Saturday’s game against Brisbane Roar with a slightly different line0up to usual, as the tall timbers in Hiroshi Ibusuki and George Blackwood started alongside each other for only the second time this season.

And they proved to be the difference in the first half.

Blackwood should have scored within the first two minutes, but his open header did not trouble Roar keeper Jordan Holmes – but his second crack at him did.

A stunning Craig Goodwin set-piece cross was finished off by a perfect Blackwood header into the bottom right corner as the home side had the lead within 15 minutes.

The Reds then doubled their lead just 11 minutes later, as this time Ibusuki tapped in the easiest of goals after a Goodwin cross that the Roar could not handle.

By half-time, the tall timbers and Goodwin were causing massive headaches for Brisbane’s defence as they trailed 2-0.

The Roar finally showed some attacking life in the second half, as a huge chance by substitute Cyrus Dehmie was brilliantly saved by Joe Gauci to keep the game locked at 2-0.

Fortunately for the Roar, they found some confidence and began to control the game in the second half.

Despite not having the possession count, the Roar had the pressure on United’s defence for the entire 45 minutes – but the Reds refused to budge.

Isaías and Juande controlled every threatening attack that the Roar threw at the Reds, whilst Gauci was gallant in goal.

With the win, the Reds make it four on the trot and have now officially locked in a finals spot.
