International flair on display as Canberra United draw in season opener

Canberra United has drawn 2-2 with Perth Glory in their opening match of the A-League Women season. United made their return to McKellar Park a memorable one as they showed off their attacking prowess with the home side easily finding their combinations in the final third.

The two teams had their turn sizing each other up, before United got a few close looks inside. Michelle Heyman, Wu Cheng Shu and Sasha Grove all had shots on goal, putting Glory goalkeeper Sarah Willacy through her paces.

Canberra found the opening goal of the contest in the 12th minute through New Zealand international Grace Jale. Making her debut for United, Jale snuck one past the keeper with a header from a Grace Maher corner.

Glory then had their turn to put the pressure on, and the away side showed several glimpses of their front-end potential but struggled to capitalise on their opportunities.

Patience paid off for the visitors in the 35th minute when Liz Anton levelled the match with a header that scraped into the top right corner off a cross from Ella Mastrantonio.

It didn’t take long for United to respond with Serbian international Vesna Milivojević adding her name to the scoresheet in the 41st minute. Once again off the assist of Grace Maher, Milivojević booted one through from the centre of the box and gave United the lead at half time.

The second half started out similar to the first with both sides taking their time to settle in. It was Glory who was next to score, with Gabriella Coleman once again levelling the match.

In her return to the capital and 50th game with the club, Nickoletta Flannery found herself on the end of multiple chances at goal but couldn’t manage to score.

Neither team were able to take control with the match ending in a draw.

Eager to build on their round 1 performances, United will fly to Queensland next Saturday to face Brisbane Roar, while Glory will head back west to host Adelaide United on the Sunday.
