Michelle Heyman double earns Canberra their first win

-

Canberra United have found their first win of the season, defeating Wellington Phoenix 3-0 in their second ever match up.

Grace Maher scored first for the home side before Michelle Heyman contributed a double, in what was a redemption match for Canberra after they lost a home game to Wellington by the same margin last season.

It was a show of speed to start the match with both teams making use of the full field. Paige Satchell was a key player for Wellington as she repeatedly ran the ball into her half.

Despite the quick pace, it was the home side who found the back of the net first through Grace Maher. In the 10th minute she managed to sneak one over goalkeeper Brianna Edwards and into the top of the goal.

One minute later, Laura Hughes nearly added a second for the home side after she found herself in a one-on-one with Edwards before her shot just bounced off the corner post.

Handling errors from the visitors gave Canberra multiple opportunities to put the pressure on but none were able to connect. Up the other end, Betsy Hassett kept Wellington alive, connecting with Satchell as they tried to put their team on the board.

Canberra’s continued pressure paid off when Michelle Heyman found herself in close range of the goal and managed to tap another for the home side. Extending her lead as the leagues leading goal scorer, this was the first time Heyman has made it on the scoresheet this season.

The home team fought off Wellington’s speed to go into half time with a 2-0 lead.

Wellington almost had the perfect start to the second half when Ava Pritchard caught goal keeper Chloe Lincoln out of the goals before Sasha Grove managed to sneak in to stop the ball just millimetres off the goal line.

It wasn’t long after that Canberra had their turn when Heyman and Vesna Milivojevic found themselves in front of the goal. With the assist from Milivojevic, Heyman was able to score her second goal of the match extending their lead to 3-0.

Both teams spent the rest of the half exploring their bench, with Canberra giving Grace Taranto her debut minutes in green.

Despite frantic efforts from Wellington, they were unable to score as Canberra went away with their first win of the season.

Next week Canberra will fly to Perth as they try to get the win over Glory after sharing the points in round one, and Wellington will host Adelaide United back in New Zealand as they search for their first win.
