Roar’s losing streak broken but result soured by injury

After two hefty A-League Women losses in the last fortnight, the Brisbane Roar have returned to the winner’s list with a 1-0 result against Western Sydney Wanderers at AJ Kelly Park.

Stalwart Matilda Katrina Gorry bolstered the home side in her first game of the season, albeit for one half.

Roar’s defining strike was a result of early teamwork, or some might say good fortune.

Larissa Crummer’s ninth minute shot on goal was deflected by Wanderers’ goalkeeper Jordyn Bloomer, only for the ball to fall perfectly in the path of goal for an opportunistic Hollie Palmer blow.

The women in orange were able to hold on to that lead for the remainder of the contest, ensuring a vital victory.

“It was really important for us to turn the last two games around,” Roar midfielder Katrina Gorry said post-game.

“We’ve had a few injuries and sicknesses in the team and we just had to adapt.

Despite the victory and Gorry’s return to match fitness, it was not all happy news for the Roar on Saturday afternoon.

During second half stoppage time, Brazilian forward Mariel Hecher succumbed to a potentially serious knee injury.

In her third ALW season, Hecher has been a consistent performer within an inconsistent Brisbane outfit to begin the campaign.

Her apparent loss is a bitter blow for the Roar, says Gorry.

“It was pretty sad seeing (Hecher) go down, especially clutching her knee,” she said.

Brisbane’s win over the Wanderers, whilst soured by injury, is the catalyst they needed to get their season moving.
