Victory’s Melina Ayres finds form in win over Glory

-

It was a battle between eighth and ninth which saw Melbourne Victory launch to fifth on the table after their 3-0 win over Perth Glory on Sunday afternoon

Melbourne Victory head coach Jeff Jopkins said he was pleased with the result and the side’s level of intensity and composure had improved following training during the week.

“I thought we were passing the ball really well before [Sarah Cain’s red card] for most of the time we were finding a spare player which was what we worked on right through the week. [Using] a central midfield player trying to find the ball to KK or to Chidz or to young Alana Murphy,” he said.

Victory dominated possession totalling 64% as well as conjuring up 504 passes compared to Glory’s little 279.

Melina Ayres starred for them scoring two of the side’s goals, an aim which Hopkins had been hoping to achieve following training.

“We did say before the game, when we get forward we’ve really gotta try and get the ball in and around her area,” he said.

“From wide areas get the ball into the box, into the centre and try and find Melina because you can kinda see she is back to the form she was in the year before last and the last three games of last year when she came back from injury.”

Ayres already has three goals to her name this season putting her level for top goalscorer in the league alongside four others. She has also already met her record from the 2019-2020 season inside this year’s opening four matches.

Despite the Victory’s second win of the season, Hopkins says the side still has a lot to work on if they want to improve and finish further up the table.

“We are not where we want to finish. We’ve still got a lot of improvement in our play in the way that we defend, in our intensity [and] in the way that we move the ball,” he said.

“We’ve got a number of new players; we’ve got a number of young players in the squad and it’s really pleasing from me and really exciting for me that we can put a performance like that together this early in the season.”

The Victory will be looking to achieve a similar performance when they face Newcastle Jets on Sunday afternoon.
