Melbourne City were quick to get off the mark with a piece of brilliance from Marco Tilio in the  9th minute after dispossessing Western United at half way line. Tilio went alone, dribbling through the defence and swiftly put it in the bottom right corner with his left foot.

A comedy of errors three minutes later by the centre back pairing of Western United saw the second goal for City. Tomoki Imai slipped in the penalty box when receiving a pass from Jamie Young, only to have it intercepted by Matt Leckie. Leckie’s cross was then clumsily put in the net by Leo Lacroix after his feet got in a tangle.

Leckie provided the initial ball cross field to Tilio who had acres of space allowing him the time to deliver a perfect cut back pass to Jamie Maclaren who also had time and space in the box. He calmly trapped the ball and converted Melbourne City’s third in under half an hour.

Western United had their first opportunity of the match in the 48th minute when half time substitute Dylan Pieras floated a cross that Aleksander Prijovic unfortunately pushed wide of the target.

To thunderous applause in the 67’ minute, Florin Berenguer made his long-anticipated return from his hamstring injury

With a great display of teamwork, Melbourne City were able to score their fourth. The move opened with Thomas Lam playing a long ball forward to Richard van der Venne, who was able to control inside the box and lay off the final pass for Andrew Nabbout who finished clinically.
