The defending premiers wasted no time to take the lead, with golden boot leader Jamie Maclaren scoring the first goal of the match in just the third minute.

Thomas Lam was able to play the long ball forward which Mathew Leckie controlled and back heeled a quick pass to Maclaren who put it into the bottom right corner.

In the 17th minute, Aiden O’Neill made a deep run into the box but was brought down, leading to the referee pointing to the spot. As always, Maclaren stood up to take the penalty but his attempt was saved by Nicolas Suman who dived low to his left. However, he was not able to hold onto the ball which led to Maclaren having a second attempt but his shot was denied by the crossbar.

Melbourne City continued to dominate precedings, and didn’t even appear to get out of first gear by the time they had doubled their lead.

City comfortably built up from the back and sliced through the Macarthur defence, ending with Valon Berisha laying off a back heel to Richard van der Venne who was able to bury a shot into the bottom left corner.

Just 10 minutes later, City young gun Jordan Bos once again showed that he may not be in the A-League for much longer as he used his elite pace to get down to the by-line and cut back a pass for van der Venne to get him his brace.

It took Melbourne City a while to get back into it in the second half, but when City won a corner in the 67th minute Florin Berenguer was able to place an inch-perfect ball onto the head of Andrew Nabbout who headed it into the top left corner to take Melbourne’s tally to four.

However, minutes later Macarthur were able to get one back when Moudi Najjar was able to place a shot into the bottom right corner. However it was all too late for Macarthur to get any points from the game.

Van der Venne was able to get his hat-trick after taking a shot from outside the box which totally stunned the Macarthur keeper as it landed in the bottom right corner.

Maclaren made Macarthur’s day even worse when he was able to get his second of the match with an easy tap-in after the ball had been bouncing around the box.
