Brisbane Roar’s 2023 A-League Women’s finals aspirations remain alive after a stunning double from American Shea Connors at Perry Park on Saturday.
The potent forward’s spectacular goal-scoring display helped her side upset equal league leaders Western United 2-0.
Connors’ monumental performance was made only more impressive after learning post-game that the attacker had lost a former teammate during the week.
Roar’s number 12 credited her teammates with helping and supporting her throughout a devastating period.
“I just found out so everyone was just getting around me. So I think that that made it a bit special as well,” Connors said post-game.
The team’s unity was on display for all to see after Connors ensured a Brisbane victory two minutes into stoppage time.
A classy finish in the corner provided the impetus for Connors’ teamates to jubilantly pile on top of her in heartwarming scenes, much to appreciation of the goal-scorer.
“The team is like family and I’m so lucky to have the people I have around me,” she said.
“It’s a great group of girls and I’m really thankful for all of them.”
Not only did Connors produce a lion-hearted individual effort, but her two goals also propelled Brisbane Roar within touching distance of finals.
Winning 2-0 against the highly fancied Western United has elevated Roar into equal fifth, and more importantly just one win shy of Melbourne Victory.
Saturday’s star sees no reason why her team can’t steamroll their way into an unlikely finals position.
“We’re looking to gatecrash 100%…if you can beat the top of the table like why can’t you win the next three games that we have… there’s no excuses.”
