Luck of the Irish as O’Shea earns Roar late victory

Brisbane Roar stalwart Jay O’Shea has kept his side’s improbable finals chances alive with a stunning strike in the twilight stages of Saturday’s clash with Western United.

The home team’s 1-0 win continues a strong stretch of form since Warren Moon’s coaching departure and Nick Green’s arrival.

After coming agonisingly close on several occasions, Brisbane finally broke the deadlock in the 81st minute of play.

O’Shea’s pure hit from deep in the box finally gave the Roar a long-awaited, rub of the green type victory, just a day after St Patrick’s celebrations.

“I was calling it a few times before… eventually played me one and I put the head down, foot through and delightfully it went in,” O’Shea said post-game.

The host’s hard fought win came under the added duress of stifling autumn heat.

Irishman O’Shea believes this was yet another aspect of the game where luck was on Brisbane’s side.

“We train in it every day so we had the upper hand going in,” he said.

“They (United) wouldn’t be used to this weather… I think it was to our advantage at the end of the day.”

Somehow, Brisbane are situated just four points from the sixth placed and struggling Sydney FC.

With nothing to lose and things falling their way, a dream run is not off the cards at all for Brisbane.

“You can’t give up on it,” O’Shea said.

“Once it’s mathematically possible we’ll be there fighting to get in.”
