Phoenix down Fury and get set for Finals

-

Wellington Phoenix finished their regular season with a comfortable 3-1 win over bottom side North Queensland Fury on Sunday.

Going into the game the Phoenix knew that a point would secure the last finals spot on the ladder, but goals from Chris Greenacre, Dylan Macalliser and goalkeeper Danny Vukovic meant they qualified with plenty to spare.

Greenacre opened the scoring when impressive youngster Marcos Rojas played the striker in after just seven minutes, and the former Manchester City man finished well.

The hosts doubled their lead just four minutes later when striker Dylan Macallister latched on to Sigmund’s long ball and finished by lobbing Sebastian Usai despite looking to have started in an offside position.

The Fury got back into the game just after hour mark when Brett Studman headed home a corner Bradley McDonald’s corner.

Studman went from hero to villain in injury time however when he was red carded for bringing down Phoenix substitute Mirjan Pavlovic in the area, and goalkeeper Danny Vukovic stepped up to fire home the spot kick.

“I went straight over to (coach) Ricki (Herbert). I’m not sure what he said but I didn’t really care what he was going to say to be fair,” said the keeper with a grin.

“I knew it was the last kick of the game and there’s probably no more perfect way for a goalkeeper to score a goal than with the last kick of the game.

“There were probably four or five boys putting their hand up. But once they saw me up there they were happy to give it to me.
