Sydney FC have been crowned premiers of the 2022/23 A-League Women season after coming out on top once again, this time with a 4-0 victory over the Newcastle Jets.
It was tough conditions out on the pitch at Allianz Stadium. Puddles across the surface of the field made the movements of the ball highly unpredictable and called for a shift in tempo from both sides.
Sydney held a 1-0 lead for majority of the match, scoring their final three goals all within the last 15 minutes of play, courtesy of Mackenzie Hawkesby and Cortnee Vine.
Head coach, Ante Juric admitted that he was stressed by the amount of minutes that ticked by where they were unable to find the back of the net.
“I did think for a second there that the football gods were gonna hurt us, so when we got that second goal I was so relieved,” Juric said.
“I think we deserved it after the performance we put on, I just wish it happened earlier.”
In the end, a 4-0 win is a solid one, and it seems that Sydney FC weren’t worried at all about how they got there, they’re just happy that they did.
This is the third year in a row that the Sky Blues have taken the premiership title, which is something that has never been done before in the ALW.
An extremely proud Ante Juric made it clear just how much the premiership title means to him, especially when it comes to this squad and the consistency they have been able to build upon over the years.
“If I had to trade a premiership for a grand final, I wouldn’t do it,” Juric said.
“This is something that is much harder to win, it means a lot more to me.”
Sydney FC fought back and forth with Western United for the top position on the table over the course of the season. If that ongoing contest in itself isn’t enough to show what the upcoming finals rounds have in store, I’m not sure what is. It’s going to be a tight one.
Concluding the regular season with a high scoring win is something that is sure to instil some extra confidence in the squad as they prepare for the finals rounds.
Ante Juric said that they will try their best to hold onto their power.
“I’m satisfied with the premiership, but the girls and the fans want this grand final win, so we’ll do everything we can to get that.
” He said.
