Mirabella Cup Super 12 Draw

-

Matches will be played between Tuesday June 28 and Wednesday 6 July, with the exception of the Ballarat Red Devils/St Albans Saints vs Hume City match which will be played at a later date due to the Ballarat vs St Albans match taking place on Saturday 9 July.

Match One: Northcote City vs Port Melbourne

Port Melbourne had probably their biggest win in the clubs history against Oceania club of the century South Melbourne last round and will feel they are in with a real shot against Northcote City.

Verdict: Can they make it two giant kills in a row? I doubt it but don’t discount them.

Match Two: Ballarat Red Devils/St Albans Saints vs Hume City

Hume City awaits the winner of the Ballarat vs St Albans match. Hume are flying high and with some fortune sit second on the VPL table.

St Albans recruit Danny Tiatto made a winning debut last weekend so the Saints will hope he can be the one that puts their season back on track.

Verdict: Doesn’t matter which team comes through, Hume will be way too strong.

Match Three: Southern Stars vs Oakleigh Cannons

Top of the VPL ladder Oakleigh travel to top state league outfit Southern Stars. Oakleigh will be looking to take this game a little more seriously after fielding a weakened team and narrowly getting over Pascoe Vale, whilst Southern stars will look to defeat another VPL team after crushing Bentleigh Greens in the last round.

Verdict: Still think Oakleigh will be too strong in this one.

Match Four: Melbourne Knights vs Cobram Victory

All the football followers in the state will be cheering on Cobram Victory in this one (except the vocal and large Knights supporter base).

The boys from Sommers St have been clinical in crushing lesser opponents so far this tournament and I can’t see this game going any other way.

Verdict: Expect a public holiday to be called on the Murray River town if the victory do get up.

Match Five: Heidelberg United vs Green Gully Cavaliers

The heavyweight battle of the round sees one time top of the VPL table Heidelberg vs last season’s premiers Green Gully.

Expect a feisty game with the Cavaliers travelling marginally better but the Bergers have the best ‘keeper outside the A-League in Griffin McMaster.

Verdict: This could go to bonus football.

Match Six: Dandenong Thunder vs Springvale White Eagles

Springvale are struggling, so this Mirabella Cup competition could become its lifeblood for the 2011 season.

Verdict: Dandenong will have one eye on the VPL finals race so this could produce an upset – however unlikely.
