The Reds went down 2-1 to Sydney FC in front of more than 12,000 fans at Hindmarsh Stadium last night.

Coolen said the match was a big loss and believes there’s plenty of room for improvement in the team.

“It was a very disappointing game, not only the loss, but the way we played”.

“There was nothing positive, a lot of negatives, so we have to take it and work on it for next week.”

Adelaide opened the scoring through Australian marquee Dario Vidosic after 28 minutes but Coolen said that Adelaide was lucky to have taken the lead.

“In the first half it didn’t go well, and I don’t think it was fair that we went into the change room at half time 1-0 up, they created more chances than us.”

Vidosic was forced off in the 52nd minute with a corked thigh and with few attacking options on Adelaide’s bench, Coolen believes the injury had a major influence on United’s game.

“In transition he’s a very important player and if we can find him… and he makes the right choice then he’s a player we can get some benefit out of,” Coolen said.

The injury to Vidosic proved costly as the link between United’s midfield and attack suffered once the twenty-four-year-old left the field.

Adelaide captain Jon McKain described the game as a poor performance and felt there were few positives the Reds could take out of the match.

“To be honest I thought it was rubbish start to finish, we didn’t follow the plan that Rini wanted us to follow early on and got ourselves in a bit of a hole and couldn’t get out.”

McKain said that Sydney deserved the three points and believes the team has plenty of work ahead of them.

“We need a bit of consistency, it’s not good enough to play one week decent and the next week to play poorly again,” he said.

United face arguably the toughest task in the Hyundai A-League next week when they head to Suncorp Stadium to face the Brisbane Roar, whose undefeated streak now stands at 31 games.
