Manchester could unite the A-League

-

In an All-Stars match? Manchester United are reportedly interested in touring Australia and the idea of a combined A-League team playing the Red Devils is floating about. It’s a juicy prospect, the idea of watching our league’s most talented take on (and, surely, down) the most successful English club.

Whilst largely associated with sports in the United States, the concept of an All-Star team is not unfamiliar in an Australian context. AFL has the recently-announced-for-2012 All-Australian team that never actually plays a match, and rugby league has the Indigenous All-Stars vs NRL All-Stars game.

The last time Manchester United toured Australia was in 1999 when they twice took on the Socceroos after their treble-winning year.  Dwight Yorke got a sniff of life in Oz and scored the winner in Sydney, something he’d do several times years later in season one of the A-League. Should MUFC tour again we at The Football Sack think they’d be better served playing full club teams, not simply a select side. Brisbane Roar, Melbourne Victory and Sydney FC are the obvious choices.

Not everyone agrees however and even within The Football Sack team there are divided opinions. We took to Twitter to find out your reaction to the current hypothetical, asking “What would you prefer, Manchester United vs an AllStar A-League squad, or against Brisbane Roar?”.

Here’s what you said:

@DGFindlay Wouldn’t an All-star team be all Brisbane Roar + ADP???
@kieran_shaker Similar to MLS Allstars, it can become an annual fixture and bring other major euro teams here!
@bennell09  If it was against an all star team I would be much less likely to go as oppossed to my club team
@John_Heidemann I don’t think an allstar team would represent as well as a a team of stars that play regularly.
@case_paul Roar. Allstars would just be a disjointed mess tactically. Put our best foot forward and all that.
@MasterScarcella I’m sick of us (as a nation) doing the “AMERICAN” thing. IMO; V Bris @ Suncorp, V Syd FC @ ANZ, and or V Victory @ MCG.
@sqljohn If its an All Star squad then it should have fan voting ala the NRL all stars v indigenous game each year
