Lady Reds sink Canberra for back-to-back wins

-

Adelaide United has stunned Canberra United at Burton Park to record a 2-0 win and leapfrog the Wanderers into fifth place on the Westfield W-League ladder.

After Round Five’s 1-0 win over the Roar, the Lady Reds have backed up with a strong performance against Canberra which will put the rest of the competition on notice as they look to shake their reputation as ‘easy beats’.

After a frantic opening the Lady Reds became just the second team this season to breach Canberra’s defence when import Lisa-Marie Woods fired home in the 9th minute. The Norwegian midfielder has impressed so far this season and capped another fine performance, firing home her first ever goal for Adelaide, taking the ball into the box and driving past Canberra ‘keeper Lydia Williams.

Adelaide doubled their lead just four minutes later after Canberra ‘keeper Lydia Williams brought down Racheal Quigley, giving the youngster the chance to slot home from the penalty spot. Quigley made no mistake and gave the Lady Reds some breathing space in front of more than 400 fans at Burton.

After Adelaide’s early dominance, the match began to settle down after the opening half-hour with the ladies in Green moving with more purpose going forward which forced the Reds to sit deeper and hit their opponents on the break.

With the score stuck at 2-0 at the major break, Canberra came out for the second 45 minutes with renewed vigour as they searched desperately for a way back into the match. For a time it appeared as though the visitors would pull a goal back and put the home side back under the pump however it never came.

Unfortunately for Canberra, the sting went from the game inside the final 10 minutes as the Lady Reds’ stout defensive pressure wore down their opponents and helped the home side to all three vital points.

Adelaide will now look forward to a home clash with the Wanderers, hoping to pick up their third consecutive win of the season. Canberra faces a tough task in Round 8 as they travel to Melbourne to take on the Victory.
