Carney stuns Victory as Jets stake claim

-

Newcastle have proven themselves to be serious contenders early on this season, keeping a clean sheet at home and defeating the reigning champions 1-0.

A beautiful strike from David Carney in the 75th minute was all it took to deliver Melbourne Victory another loss to the Jets at Hunter Stadium.

Daniel Mullen made Newcastle’s intentions for the match clear with a yellow in the 3rd minute for his actions during a free kick.

After several opportunities Milos Trifunovic intercepted a weak pass from Leigh Broxham to go one on one with Danny Vukovic, only to plant it directly in his hands.

An intercept by the Jets and a cross from Leonardo to Trifunovic resulted in another opportunity missed from the home team.

Jets’ coach Scott Miller will have a lot to consider with the excellent display from Ben Kennedy, who is proving to be fierce competition in the fight for first choice goalkeeper against Birighitti.

Kennedy knocked a ball over the crossbar to maintain a clean sheet and Newcastle’s defensive line showed support, keeping out the power duo of Berisha and Ben Khalfallah.

A yellow card to Valeri in the 30th minute resulted from a missed opportunity for the Jets which quickly turned into a missed chance for Melbourne, with Berisha gaining control of the ball only to hit the crossbar.

With an abundance of action at both ends of the park the scores were level at half time. The Jets out from the sheds with an abundance of energy only to struggle to convert. Melbourne maintained their high press and attacking prowess.

But the goal would come for Newcastle and it was golden haired boy David Carney who would send the home crowd into raptures. A free kick in the 75th minute was passed short to Carney who clattered the ball from distance into the back of the net.

The win will prove essential for Newcastle Jets as they push for a successful campaign, and Melbourne Victory will have a lot to consider moving into the next round after failing to convert for 90 minutes.
