A last minute goal from Nicole Begg sealed all three points for Canberra United in a frustrating defeat for Sydney FC at Lambert Park.

In a game that looked likely to finish in a draw, the 88th minute winner was a bitter end for the Sky Blues as a low cross found its way through an unorganised Sydney defence to meet the boot of Begg tracking in at the far post.

The goal was one of few moments of note in a tight game that saw the visitors leap frog the Sky Blues to move into third place on the Westfield W-League ladder.

The first half played stage to some largely uninspired play. Some promising moments in the opening minutes quickly gave way, and a lack of creativity led to few goal scoring opportunities.

The second half provided the supporters with a welcome change, Jasmyne Spencer yet again leading the Sydney effort. Her snap shot early in the half caught Canberra keeper Lydia Williams off guard as the ball struck her chest, denying the Sydney forward.

In reply the visitors launched a counter attack which saw Sydney keeper Michelle Betos make a brash decision to race off her line providing Ash Sykes with an open goal from a tight angle, the striker finding the side netting as the deadlock continued.

Just as both teams seemed set on sharing the points, a break down the right wing from the visitors caught the Sydney defence off guard allowing Nicole Begg to place the low cross which wandered through the backline into the net much to the dismay of the home team.

The goal made for some frantic final moments as the Sky Blues looked to salvage something from the game. A surging run from Kennedy parted the Canberra midfield as she threaded a ball to Ibini-Isei who rounded Lydia Williams but couldn’t control the ball.

It would finish 1-0 at the final whistle, Canberra stealing all three points at the death leaving a frustrated Sydney to question their inconsistent form.
