Sydney’s Alexander Gersbach was shown a red card in the first half before Adelaide scored a late winner to cap off an incredible night.

Despite the excitement that eventuated Friday nights clash began in a very subdued manner.

For the opening 25 minutes both teams seemed content to hold possession with a defensive first mindset.

Although neither side was on top, Sydney certainly had more attractiveness to their play with some beautiful connecting balls.

Adelaide would occasionally move the ball into a dangerous position but lacked any real intent or conviction in their buildup.

Then without warning, a moment of madness changed the entire complexity of the occasion.

Sydney’s Alexander Gersbach slid in recklessly taking the legs of Jimmy Jeggo and subsequently earning himself a red card.

This swung the game into Adelaide’s favour, allowing the home team to dominate general play and create plenty of glorious chances.

Sanchez firstly hit the cross bar with a delightful free kick before the same man had a goal ruled out on the stroke of half time.

The aggressive, entertaining first half closed and the second half started as expected with Adelaide controlling the ball and doing all the attacking.

The Sky Blues were showing little to no attacking threat now and seemed almost content with a point.

However Sydney’s game style would require a reshuffle when Jimmy Jeggo deservedly put the hosts ahead.

Jeggo’s lethal strike from just outside the box slightly touched a Sydney defender, sending the ball into the back of the net.

The Adelaide goal forced Sydney to push more numbers up the field in the hope of an equalizer.

Despite their improved offensive showing it was Adelaide who still looked more likely to score next.

But when does football ever go according to plan?

From a slight defensive lapse and a bit of creativity, Holosko chipped the ball over the head of Galekovic to remarkably level the game at 1-1.

Both teams pushed hard for the victory but a draw seemed the likely outcome.

In the very last minute of action, Dylan McGowan would change that story, brought down in the box and winning a penalty for Adelaide.

An ice cool Marcelo Carrusca stepped up and he expertly buried the ball into the top corner giving Adelaide a deserving 2-1 victory.

It’s the second straight victory for the men in red, taking them to nine points and within striking distance of the top six.
