Victory steal win over Newcastle Jets

-

With both teams desperate for a win after bad form of late, Melbourne silenced their bogey team with a 1-0 win over Newcastle Jets at Hunter Stadium.

Melbourne looked fierce in the opening minutes, putting a lot of pressure on Newcastle from the get-go.

Jason Hoffman was close to scoring an own goal at the three-minute mark as the ball came off Mark Birighitti, ricocheted off Hoffman and rebounded off the bar.

Birighitti made a series of exceptional saves within minutes as Melbourne proved too much for the Newcastle defence.

Putting his body on the line, Birighitti showed great skill to deny a lead to the visitors.

Hoffman received a yellow after some nasty words with the referee stemming from frustration in the physical encounter.

There was drama in the 37th minute as a nasty challenge by Besart Berisha left Daniel Mullen on the ground.

Ryan Kitto built some confidence after the break, nailing a corner in the 48th minute, which connected with Jason Hoffman who put a bit too much power into it to send the ball over the bar.

Hoffman had a right place, right time moment, blocking a shot from Victory to keep the game scoreless in the 52nd minute.

A speedy counter-attack by Victory would lead to the opening goal. A stunning strike from Fahid Ben Khalfallah in the 71st minute made it 1-0 as he outran the Newcastle squad to put a rare ball past Birighitti.

Trifunovic seemed to be in his best form of the season, connecting a header directly on target only to be collected by Daniel Vukovic.

Coach Scott Miller made some changes to add energy to the squad, adding Braedyn Crowley and Radovan Pavicevic into the mix while Kevin Muscat opted to sideline some of his experience and talent, with Archie Thompson and Ben Khalfallah coming off in place of Connor Pain and Rashid Mahazi respectively.

The changes didn’t make too much of a difference as both teams continued to create chances but ultimately couldn’t find enough to get a goal. 1-0 the final result.
