Newcastle take 2-1 win over 10-man Melbourne City

-

A consistently disappointing Newcastle Jets took a small step forward in an impressive 2-1 win over Melbourne City on Sunday.

New signings Motern Nordstrand and Steven Ugarkovic made a positive impact for the home side but it was Milos Trifunovic who sealed the win with two goals in the most exciting game of football Newcastle has seen in a while.

Chances for both teams opened the game but neither was able to make an impact in the early minutes of the first half.

Jason Hoffman gave away a free kick just outside the box in the 33rd minute, setting Aaron Mooy up with a great chance at goal.

Mark Birighitti put his skills on display deflecting a shot from the free kick and working to collect the shot from the rebound.

Mooy had one last shot before half time but sent it far over the goal to end the first half scoreless.

The Jets luck certainly seemed to change in the second half landing a penalty in the 47th minute after a handball from City’s Jack Clisby.

Trifunovic put his penalty abilities on display misdirecting Thomas Sorenson and sliding it calmly into the back of the net.

Mooy attempted to retaliate in the 52nd minute but sent the ball wide as the Jets held their slim 1-0 lead.

Trifunovic kept his side’s momentum going chasing down a ball in the 53rd and flicking it back just in front of the goal but no Jets could finish off the quality recovery.

Ugarkovic made himself known to the home fans with an ambitious shot from far out looking promising but flying just past the net.

Osama Malik showed his frustration in the 55th minute with a less than subtle hit on Leonardo earning him a yellow.

Jacob Melling then left Melbourne City a man down after earning himself a red card in the 63rd for making contact as the last man.

The 10-man City squad struggled to keep a confident Newcastle at bay as Enver Alivodic set up a great ball for new signing Nordstrand who set Trifunovic up for a perfect shot, extending the lead to 2-0

City made their way onto the scoreboard in the 79th minute as Bruno Fornaroli converted a quality ball from substitute Nick Fitzgerald, leaving the score sitting at 2-1.

A tense end to the game followed but no one was able to seize the opportunity for another goal as the game ended 2-1.
