Nordstrand brings hope to Newcastle in 3-2 win

-

Newcastle made excellent use of new signing Morten Nordstrand to take three very important points in a 3-2 win over Wellington Phoenix.

A corner to Wellington set them up for a great opportunity in the 22nd minute as Hamish Watson collected the rebound calmly to strike the ball past Jets keeper Mark Birighitti and defender Daniel Mullen to give Phoenix 1-0 lead.

Leonardo set up an equaliser in the 27th minute as a pass to Alivodic saw a shot on goal come off Wellington defender Andrew Durante.

Watson scored his second goal of the night in the 37th minute from a moment of poor goalkeeping by Mark Birighitti. Birighitti came high to defend Blake Powell but the rebound felll to the feet of Watson who took the shot well to regain the lead.

The 52nd minute saw a chance for Jets to equalize but a great cross from Morten Nordstrand couldn’t manage to meet Leonardo in front of the goal.

Nordstrand left nothing to chance only a minute later as he sent a beautiful ball into the back of the net from wide to make the score 2-2.

His first Hyundai A-League goal is one of the best goals Jets fans have seen from their team this season, putting the Dane’s pedigree firmly on display.

There was a close call for the Jets in the 64th as Birighitti struggled to keep out a Wellington shot which would have been a goal if it hadn’t been for Mullen’s placement and ability to clear it out of play.

Cameron Watson earned himself a yellow in the 66th minute after practically running over Bonevacia. The card saw swift action as he was subbed off in place of Nick Cowburn moments later.

Wellington’s double scorer Hamish Watson found himself hitting the sheds early after a show of poor sportsmanship saw him kick the ball away as Mullen set up for a free kick, earning himself a second yellow of the night in the 71st minute.

Newcastle made quick use of their extra man to set Nordstrand up and another quality finish saw him take his second of the night and the 3-2 lead in the 73rd minute.

Birighitti earned himself a yellow for time wasting in extra time but the home team still managed to take an important win 3-2.
