Jets finals hopes fall in the hands of Wanderers

-

Newcastle made their final attempts to cling to the possibility of finals football but couldn’t overcome a quality Wanderers side, falling 1-0 at home.

Wanderers kicked off the game with fire, taking a 1-0 lead in the 17th minute thanks to an impressive finish from Jaushua Sotirio.

Sotirio took the shot well after a scuffle in the box left Jets’ keeper Mark Birighitti unable to get up in time to make a save.

Lachlan Jackson earned the first card of the night with a yellow in the 32nd minute after a dangerous tackle.

Wanderers dominated possession early in the first half but the Jets managed to kick into gear with a perfect chance to take the lead in the 43rd from Morten Nordstrand playing a quality ball to Milos Trifunovic who couldn’t finish.

Wanderers’ stole back possession of the game coming into the second half putting Birighitti through his paces with shot after shot heading toward the goal.

Birighitti made some great saves to keep Wanderers from extending their lead and Wanderers sent their goal scorer to the bench in place of super-sub Brendan Santalab.

Leonardo had a chance to even the score in the 66th but Liam Reddy was able to collect.

Mark Bridge made a big run in the 69th but Ben Kantarovski played his defensive role well keeping Bridge at bay while Bridge earned a yellow after words with the referee.

Dario Visodic came on in place of Castelen in the 68th and Ryan Kitto came on for Trifunovic in the 73rd in attempts by both coaches to get their team a goal.

Kitto made good use of his minutes with a beautiful cross to Nordstrand right in front of the goal but Reddy proved too much, diving right out of his goals to collect.

Alberto got himself a write up for a push on Leonardo, leaving the Jets with a free kick in perfect position for an equaliser.

Leonardo send the ball in well and Nigel Boogaard managed to connect but headed the ball into the bar with no one ready to finish as the ball ricocheted back in front of goal.

Wanderers made their final substitution in the 84th minute, bringing Kearyn Baccus on in place of Andreu.

The final chances for Jets seemed to get to the Wanderers with Dimas Delgado given a yellow during the set up of a Jets free kick.

Birighitti made his way into the mix for a last minute free kick and managed to get a quality strike off a goal line scuffle but it was cleared off the line just in time for Wanderers to claim their victory.
