Four goal victory over Victory for Reds

-

Adelaide United picked up their first points east of Murray River with a comprehensive 4-0 win over Melbourne Victory at Epping Stadium on Sunday.

The preseason additions lead the way for the Lady Reds with former Perth Glory forward Rosie Sutton claiming a hat-trick on the day whilst Pensylvania born US defender Abby Dahlkemper was impervious in the heart of defence.

It was the energetic Sutton who broke the deadlock in the 14th minute after impressive former Manly United forward Tiarn Powell seized on an errant pass out of the Victory defence and slid the ball through to Sutton who finished sweetly past Melissa Barbieri.

Pressure from Adelaide forced the second goal 20 minutes later as Victory were unable to clear a corner and the aforementioned Powell bundled home from all of two yards out.

Whilst Victory were the side in need of a half time gee-up, it was Adelaide who took just 10 minutes to add to their advantage after the break.

Chantelle Ryder broke loose down the right and whipped in a skimming ball which Sutton met on the half volley, delightfully whipping it beyond a helpless Barbieri.

Victory continued to struggle to gain any kind of solid foothold in the match with Barbieri making numerous strong saves to deny the visitors.

Unfortunately for the home supporters Barbieri was asked to rescue her defence one too many times, rushing out to try and deny Sutton in a one on one scenario, catching the forward’s leg and being shown a red card. Sutton stepped up to calmly slot past substitute ‘keeper Cass Dimovski to all but seal the points for Adelaide.

A few pieces of quick interplay between Enza Barilla and Hayley Raso gave Victory a sniff of a consolation late on but there was no stopping Adelaide from taking 3 points from Melbourne’s deep northern suburbs.

That win takes Adelaide to the dizzying heights of 2nd and they will be back in Victoria next week as they try to upset the all-conquering Melbourne City whilst The Victory will head to Western Sydney desperately searching for their first points of the season.
