Irish international striker Andy Keogh has re-signed with former club Perth Glory.
In a press conference held in the Macron pop-up store in Carillon City yesterday morning, Keogh was joined by head coach Kenny Lowe and CEO Peter Filopoulos.
“Today we are delighted to announce that Andy Keogh has signed with Perth Glory Football Club for the next two Hyundai A-League seasons,” Filopolous revealed in his statement to the media.
“Once we became aware that Andy’s playing stint at Thai Premier League club Ratchaburi had come to an end – we immediately made contact to get him back at the club and re-join his family in sunny Perth,” he added.
This is a massive coup for the Glory, with the former Wolves man still only 29-years-old and more than proven in the league already.
Filopolous explained that Keogh’s contract “effectively commences on January 5 2016,” which is due to the five visa spots already being taken up. It’s unlikely that he will be able to feature this season, but this all depends on negotiations with the FFA.
With import Guyon Fernandez having recently suffered what looks to be a serious foot injury, he could be placed on the long-term injury list to enable Keogh to slot into the squad sooner than expected.
There were a number of bids for the marksman – confirmed by the player himself – and Filopolous, Glory have done well to secure his services. Perth are lacking goals and Keogh is definitely the man to remedy this issue for the club.
It’s not just his eye for goal that should excite fans, as Kenny Lowe revealed that his “winning mentality” is infectious.
“We’ve secured Andy’s services to grow the club,” Lowe stated.
“When he first arrived he brought something into the club, he changed the training regime of certain players, because of the way he went about his business. They actually looked at what he did and went ‘wow’ I want a bit of that,” Lowe added.
One thing that stands out with this deal is its long term nature.
By acquiring the services of such a talent who isn’t in the twilight of his career, Glory will be able to build a team around him.
Keogh insisted that the club holds a special place in his heart and given the Thai Premier League did not meet his expectations, and the chance to reunite with his family back in Perth, it is a safe move.
This seems to be a new dawn for a club trying its best to leave last year’s scandals behind them, despite the palpable irony of Keogh being heavily embroiled in that scandal.
Glory fans should be extremely encouraged by this major signing and the work of new CEO Filopolous, who is hopeful that this is the first of many exciting announcements for the club.
Perhaps the Glory days are returning.
