Jets finally break the biggest of seals

-

After going 566 minutes without, Newcastle Jets scored a goal, leading to a 3-1 victory over Wellington Phoenix and only four points from the top six.

It’s been a frustrating season for the Jets who, after an impressive start to the season, have been unable to score, let alone take a win in over 500 minutes.

“It’s been a long time in the waiting, but it’s a great feeling for the team who haven’t stopped working all year,” said Miller.

“It’s a great satisfaction for them.

“It was all about responsibility this week and individual responsibility in the final third.

“I can’t be any more pleased for the playing group and the commitment they showed today.

“I thought they showed great energy and appetite for the game.”

Despite their faltering results coach Scott Miller and the players have maintained their belief in the changes and structure of the squad in helping them achieve their goals.

“I trusted the players out there today and I’ve trusted them all season.

“Yes, players frustrate you because you demand more and expectations of a coach are huge so when you don’t see them playing to their potential sometimes it does frustrate you, but they did that today.”

The inability to find a win has been affecting not only the squad, but the coaching staff and the fans as it gets further into the season.

While the frustration has been impacting everyone, Miller is confident their luck could turn around coming into the second half of the season,

“Wins count and wins put you in contention,” said Miller.

“Our aim is to win more, win more and put a lot more pressure on those teams above us.

“We’ve now won our first game in 11 weeks and it’s a nice feeling.

“We want to enjoy the win as a group but really focus on next week because two wins on the bounce will get you up in the top six.”

The Jets have been boasting a young squad due to injuries and minimal numbers yet players like of David Carney have been getting plenty of deserved attention.

“David’s vital to the club, he’s had a resurgent year but I must elude to the support he’s getting from his teammates.”

Carney set up an excellent goal for Ryan Kitto and turned around to extend the lead in a tactical play leaving him one on one with the goalkeeper.

“We’d worked on that move in training all week, to see it actually come off is very good because it sees people are taking on information visually and the execution was outstanding.

The Jets will be looking for back-to-back victories when they take on Perth at home next Sunday.
