5 best signings of the A-League January transfer window

-

Several A-League clubs turned to the transfer market this January to refresh their squads and revitalize their season.

There have been some notable departures but the competition has also seen some exciting acquisitions. With the window slamming shut on Tuesday night we take a look at a few of the best signings this past month.

Andy Keogh (Perth Glory)

Although signed in December Keogh only made his return on the pitch for the Glory last month. Head coach Kenny Lowe said at the turn of the year that he needed a top quality striker to turn the club’s season around and the Irishman, Perth’s top scorer last season, could be just that. He’s already played a part in Perth’s demolition of Newcastle and already scored his first goal back in the team in the win over the Victory.

It’s going to take a lot for the Glory to make finals but he could be the difference.

Luis Garcia (Central Coast Mariners)

At 37 years of age and without a club for more than a year, some may have rolled their eyes at the Mariners new marquee signing. But the former Liverpool winger has already made his mark in Gosford. An exquisite backheel to score against Wellington showed his class on the pitch and he’s shown plenty of class off it as well with a readiness to take part in the local football community.

The Mariners may be rooted to the bottom of the table but the Spaniard has given them a boost.

Morten Nordstrand (Newcastle Jets)

Not exactly a household name outside of his native Denmark, Nordstrand brings plenty to the table for the struggling Jets. Capable of playing up front or behind the striker, Nordstrand bagged more than 140 goals in Denmark’s top flight. The veteran goal scorer brings experience and a winning mentality with him to Newcastle; attributes the Jets are in desperate need of.

Stefan Mauk (Adelaide United)

While Adelaide fans will be disappointed to see the man with the best name in the competition, Jimmy Jeggo, leave the club there should be plenty of excitement for his replacement. United have brought in the 20-year-old attacking midfielder from Melbourne City after half a season in which he has scored four goals and grabbed two assists. He has already shown immense potential and could thrive under Guillermo Amor. Certainly one to watch.

David Carney (Sydney FC)

A deal completed on the final day of the window. Not only have Sydney picked up an in-form attacker that will be a massive boost for their late season push, they’ve also done it without losing a future star in Andrew Hoole. Carney has been a key creative figure at the Jets (three goals, four assists and 30 chances created) but can now do a job for his former side who have their sights set on the top. Whether he sticks around for too long is another question. Not everyone will agree but he’s a big boost for Graham Arnold’s team.
