The Dugout: Round 20 of the A-League

-

Digging up all the action from the Hyundai A-League in the week that was.

Dugout

These two teams are a bit of alright:

Wellington Phoenix: Phoenix put a halt on the Wanderers campaign with a 5-2 victory last week with an unexpected yet impressive performance.

Perth Glory: Their fourth consecutive win has left Perth inches away from finals after a 2-1 win over sixth place Sydney.

Playa’ can play

Blake Powell had an incredible four goal display against Wanderers last round to put his talents on show. The former APIA Leichhardt Tigers striker was the golden boot winner in last season’s NPL New South Wales, proving he can be deadly in front of goal.

Snakes and ladders

Brisbane have taken back the top spot this week as Wanderers fall to second. Adelaide have climbed up to third while Melbourne City and Melbourne Victory are sitting at fourth and fifth respectively on 29 points.

Sydney FC is just hanging on to sixth spot as an eager Perth sits only three points behind in seventh. Jets and Wellington are further out of the mix in eighth and ninth while it’s safe to say the Mariners are out of luck this season with only 12 points in tenth spot.

Get this fact into you

Despite scoring a massive 46 goals so far this season Melbourne City have conceded 35, leaving them second in goals conceded only in front of a faltering Mariners.

Where it’s at

Another derby this week means the spotlight is on Sydney as Wanderers head to Allianz Stadium in an attempt to knock Sydney FC out of the top six. After a big loss Wanderers should be filled with fire while Sydney will be desperate to take the three points and increase their chances at finals.

Dude is a young gun

We should all keep our eyes peeled for an appearance from Jackson Bandier. They young defender signed a two year contract with Wanderers and looks to be one to watch in coming seasons.

Great expectations for the weekend

Melbourne Victory v Adelaide United: Will Melbourne’s fine land them in the same place as Wanderers or will they fight for the chance at back to back Premierships and knock Adelaide down a peg?

Newcastle Jets v Wellington Phoenix: Two of the most inconsistent teams of the season will take to Hunter Stadium fighting for a win to keep their season alive as they drop further from the top group.

Perth Glory v Brisbane Roar: Perth have won their last four games which will fuel their fire as they take on a dominant Brisbane side. Will Perth move closer to the top six or will Perth take all the Glory?

Melbourne City v Central Coast Mariners: Melbourne are certainly the more dominant side and are expected to come out on top but will Mariners and their golden boy be able to steal a win?
