Popovic keeping faith after another draw

Despite another improved performance Western Sydney Wanderers were unable to escape a fourth straight draw at Spotless Stadium in a 1-1 stalemate with Brisbane Roar.

Playing some very fine football at times but lacking a finishing touch, Wanderers coach Tony Popovic liked what he saw of his team.

“We showed how good we are without the result. They deserve some reward and that will come,” he said.

On the back foot for much of the match, Brisbane Roar coach John Aloisi admitted his side weren’t at their best.

“It wasn’t one of our better performances but when you’re not playing well you need to somehow grind out a result and we did do that so that’s a positive.

“It wasn’t until the last five ten minutes that we managed to keep the ball and show what we’re about as a football team,” Aloisi said.

Though Western Sydney showed greater intent to open the scoring, the Roar found themselves ahead in the 18th minute through a Jamie Maclaren penalty after Jerrad Tyson made contact with the striker in the box.

Fined $3000 midweek for previous criticism of referees, Popovic seemed to praise the ref’s conviction to give the spot-kick.

“The ref was 100 percent sure it was a penalty which is fair enough,” Popovic said.

The focus of much discussion during the week as contract discussions with the Roar stalled and interest elsewhere swirled, Aloisi praised Maclaren for putting the drama behind him.

“During the week you could see some things were playing on his mind. He won the penalty and had the confidence to put it away so that was good,” he said.

Michael Theo was again outstanding in goals for the Roar making more saves against the Wanderers than he has all season.

“The best teams in the world can’t play all their games at that top level and when you don’t play at your top level you need a keeper to keep you out of situations and he has done that the last two weeks,” Aloisi said.

While the red and black faithful may be frustrated without a home win so far this season, Popovic himself is keeping the faith.

“You’ve got to believe in what you do and there’s no reason not to believe.”
